In January, this year, Crown and Canopy were approached by The National Trust to create a glamping manual or guide book to help inform their farm and estate managers of how to go about setting up glamping retreats across the UK. This document would introduce them to the world of glamping and guide them through setting up high end retreats from inception to completion.

The book would also include a business modelling section setting out average nightly rates, investment costs, ongoing maintenance costs and estimated yearly net profits from each style of retreat based on various occupancy rates from bell tents to tree houses. This information could then be used to create cash flow forecasts and projected returns for business plans, planning and grant applications.

Crown and Canopy has provided consultancy to many farms and estates across the country for a number of years now and the first initial visits are all about establishing the viability, unique selling points and how suitable the land is for the business.  So, the team began to write the book in the same format. After months of work transferring this information and process on to paper, as well as substantial market research, Crown and Canopy has published a 50-page document designed to guide farmers and estate managers through the set-up process of a glamping business.

Crown and Canopy set out exactly what they really look for in a piece of land in the appraisal section and then moved into the philosophy and design of a site.

This step by step guide then takes the reader through the entire journey and all the variables to consider from services and infrastructure to interior design, safety and day to day running.

Whilst writing the document the team soon realised that the information it contained would be very valuable to many people across the UK setting out on their own ventures, so they decided to create a public version with added marketing and management sections based on their own experience of running retreats in Herefordshire for the last 5 years.

Crown & Canopy’s ‘Glamping Guide’ will be officially released at this year’s Glamping Show but if you can’t wait that long advanced copies are available from the Crown & Canopy website now!
